The New TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronometer Is So Wild
More dynamic than vintage, this Monza features an impressive COSC-certified flyback chronograph.replica watches for sale
When it comes to TAG Heuer chronographs, the Monza ranks just behind the more popular (and collectible) Carrera, Autavia, and Monaco. Launched in 1976, the TAG Heuer Monza, like most TAG Heuer chronographs, was inspired by racing cars. After Ferrari won the Formula One Constructors Championship in 1975 and Niki Lauda won the Drivers Championship, TAG Heuer, then Ferrari sponsor, released the Monza to celebrate Ferrari's first victory since 1964.
Today, Monza returns in a massive, skeletal fashion. Just as Niki Lauda might not recognize today's Formula 1 cars, the new TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronometer has little in common with the original Monza other than its bold case. This case is the starting point for Monza's new statement: it's a 42mm carbon fiber case with a patterned finish that, to me, looks like a blacked-out rendering of Van Gogh's Starry Night. The crown and chronograph pushers are matched in black DLC-coated stainless steel.mens replica watch
The movement is next statement: the Monza uses TAG Heuer's in-house Caliber Heuer 02 COSC Flyback. In TAG Heuer's previous packaging, it was one of the more cost-effective Swiss-made chronograph movements - a column wheel (shown in red so you can see it in action), a vertical Clutch and 80 hours power reserve. Even better, it's COSC certified in this new Monza watch.
The dial is hollowed out with tachymeter and pulsometer scales on the outer ring. Red and blue accents on the rest of the watch add pops of color to the black case and dial. The two subdials at three and six o'clock feature translucent blue fumé sapphire crystal, while the indexes are blue lacquer. At the same time, the trapezoidal date window at nine o'clock is framed in red. The blue hour markers and date window - a first for TAG Heuer - use Super-Luminova.Replica Richard Mille RM 50-03 McLaren
In September 1975, at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, Ferrari driver Niki Lauda finished third in the Italian Grand Prix, with teammate Clay Regazzoni winning. That was enough for Ferrari to win the Formula 1 constructors' championship, and it was enough for Lauda to win the individual title. Since TAG Heuer was a sponsor and supplier of Ferrari's timing equipment, it celebrated the victory with a new chronograph model called the Monza. It marks TAG Heuer's entry into the (very 1970s) world of black-coated chronographs (Jeff Stein recently explained the history of the black-coated Monaco for us).
Today, TAG Heuer sponsors the Red Bull Formula One team. Cars go faster. The Monza has evolved from an early automatic power chronograph to a skeletonized supercar with TAG Heuer's state-of-the-art technology. Times have changed. Modern TAG Heuer has always been a brand somewhere between TAG Heuer tradition and Hublot arrogance. That's not necessarily a bad thing. If you want a watch that's more faithful to those vintage TAG Heuer chronographs that are collectible, I'd point you to the Carrera 60th Anniversary Edition, also released, a faithful modern interpretation of the very rare 2447SN, because the new Monza is definitely more Hublot than vintage Tag Heuer. If TAG Heuer is going to keep making watches like this, why not Monza? Most hardcore Heuer collectors have a stronger affinity for the three collectible chronographs (Carrera, Autavia, Monaco); anyone following the Monza is much smaller. Of course, choose Monza. Oversized, skeletonized, carbonized. Making it almost double the cost of the new Carrera 60th Anniversary Edition.
The Heuer Caliber 02 is a real standout for Monza. It’s a COSC-certified flyback chronograph, something we’ve only seen in the retro-styled Autavia released last year. A few years ago, we explained why it could be one of the best value Swiss-made chronographs on the market. It already has a column wheel and a vertical clutch; the flyback and COSC certification that TAG Heuer originally brought to the Autavia and now the Monza are enhanced bonuses.luxury replica watches
I recently read Jack Heuer's autobiography, In My Time. In it, he refers to 1975 as the year of development of the Monza, Heuer's "Annus horribilis". Sales were down 40 percent, he said, and "Even if Niki Lauda wins Formula 1 in Ferrari, it won't help cheer us up." The next section is titled "Rolex Bienne Takeover," in which Heuer details The circumstances that almost led to Rolex's acquisition of Heuer are described; but that's a story for another day. This is the environment Heuer released the original Monza into. It's a big, bold black experimental watch that TAG Heuer hopes will save a struggling manufacturer.
If modern TAG Heuer were to release a watch that looked like this, more dynamic than vintage, it seemed fitting to use the Monza, born in a time when TAG Heuer needed boldness and experimentation to survive. Sure, it might not be your particular favorite TAG, but the Monza illustrates how even 47 years after the original, TAG Heuer is still pushing its watchmaking industry forward.Replica Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
